Babies Not Included was started by Michael Carpenter, who lives in the United Kingdom. When he and his wife were expecting their daughter, they started buying things they would need from a large UK chain store. After the birth, they continued to purchase items from this chain, such as diapers, baby cereal, formula, etc. Besides their regular shops, this company also has a robust online presence, so it was easy to make a large order and have it shipped rather than dealing with taking everything home on the bus.
Michael wondered about parents in the US, and if there was a need for a similar one-stop shop for expecting and new parents. Since this chain only deals with the UK, Michael partnered his new store with Amazon.com. Their proven track record and experience in dealing with shipping anywhere in the US meant they were the perfect fit for his concept. Thus, Babies Not Included made its online debut in January, 2007.
BNI is now a place where you can get the items you need during these important first few years. From pregnancy test kits to cribs that convert to junior beds, almost everything required (except the baby, of course) can be ordered and shipped directly to your door. The fun items (toys, books, strollers), and the mundane but still vital items (blankets, bodysuits, bottles) are available, without having to leave your house - important when you're in the final stages of pregnancy, or caring for a two-week old, or a toddler with a cold. This is the kind of store Michael hopes will help other parents at the start of an amazing time in life.
